             Touch-type, Read and Spell (TTRS)

A new service for children with Dyslexia and other learning difficulties

The purpose of Touch-type Read and Spell is to help develop the literacy skills of people who have difficulties with reading, writing and spelling and at the same time increase their level of self-esteem and motivation.  The objective is to promote reading and spelling development through touch-typing based on the word lists in the textbook Alpha to Omega (by Bevé Hornsby, Frula Shear and Julie Pool).  The student will learn a vocabulary of 4,000 words through typing, seeing the words and sentences on screen and hearing them on headphones.

Because of its multi-sensory and carefully structured approach TTRS, when correctly delivered, is highly effective for learners whose literacy difficulties arise from dyslexia, visual and hearing impairments, downs syndrome and disrupted educational history.  It has also been found to be effective for people who speak English as an additional language.

TTRS is now running in over forty centres in Ireland and has proved very successful in developing the literacy as well as the confidence and self-esteem of children with learning difficulties. The course is a result of three years’ study of children learning with computers and fifteen years of application and improvement.   The founding company’s website www.ttrs.co.uk contains a wealth of information about the course and its success, including testimonials from people who have used the programme.

Along with developing literacy, TTRS also teaches typing skills.  Children who struggle with dyslexia or other learning difficulties are always advised and encouraged, by resource teachers and educational psychologists, to develop their typing skills. It makes it easier to produce a volume of work when a child is able to type at a brisk speed.

TTRS will run in our training rooms in Wexford and Enniscorthy and each class will be for one hour per week.  Courses are run during term time and over the summer.  It is used by students from 7 years of age and upwards, including adults.
