NOT JUST KEYBOARD SKILLS
Times Educational Supplement in an article entitled A Touch of Prgress Sally McKeown commented on "an innovative computer based programme for dyslexics" and the following:
Finger Patterns
"There s considerable evidence that students learn finger patterns on the computer which reinforce correct spellings. They are looking and choosing, building up letter strings and words rather than worrying about the orientation of individual letters. In this way they are developing and practising skills whilst composing ..."
Linking Sound and Symbol
"For those students who have not managed to link sound and symbol in a reliable way, this is a chance to start from scratch while learning a new skill ..."
Range of Strategies
"The scheme uses a range of strategies 'to break the cycle of failure'. By the end of the course, students have improved their spelling, reading, short term memory, co-ordination and concentration ..."
For whom is this course designed?
- TTRS is for anyone who has reading, spelling, or writing difficulties
- TTRS helps both Adults and Children
- TTRS is especially helpful for those who are Dyslexic or who have Specific Learning Difficulties
Course Objectives are to promote learning by -
- Building confidence through measurable success
- Immediate self correction of errors and feedback of results

- A multi-sensory approach, seeing, hearing and touch-typing
- A planned programme of learning that is finely structured and computerised
TTRS is designed to do several things at one time:
- It teaches the student to Touch-type
- At the same time it teaches Spelling and Reading
- It does this using Phonics (teaching reading by training people to associate letters with their sound values)
- It encourages students to 'Spell with their fingers'
Touch-typing (being able to type with multiple fingers without looking at the keyboard) needs to be taught and assists people with visual impairments or specific learning difficulties in several ways:
- Clarity of presentation and legibility of work
- Speed of input - allowing the child to keep pace with the teacher
- Spelling - tactile learning of spelling patterns
- Handwriting - typing reduces the physical and mental pressure for a struggling writer
- Presentation - editing work is easier
- Empowerment - good keyboarding skills promotes independence, confidence and success
Each class is of one hour's duration and courses are held in our training rooms in Wexford, Enniscorthy and Raheen. Contact us at 053 9146291 or email info@westgatecc.com to arrange a FREE lesson.
